Help a Child uses several different data collection tools to measure the results and impact of our Turakura program. These tools are part of the reporting framework. For every data collection tool a manual, tool in pdf (for printing), and data form are available below.

The Child Status Index is closely related to Help a Child’s overall goal: improved wellbeing for all children. The Child Status Index – Early Childhood measures the wellbeing of children on the physical, social-emotional and cognitive domains. Within our Turakura projects, the Child Status Index – Early Childhood is used as a group-based tool, meaning that groups of children and groups of adults sit together to discuss and score the different themes.

With the Community Empowerment Scorecard, progress in different domains related to community empowerment can be measured. Groups look at the community as a whole rather than their own group (their near community in their villages) and value their level of community empowerment. It is an outward-looking perspective. This tool can be done with the same group as the Community Group Capacity Scorecard.

With the Community Group Capacity Scorecard, groups reflect on their own performances. They look at the functioning of their own group and the capacity of their own group. It is an inward-looking perspective, in contrast to the Community Empowerment Scorecard, which is often conducted in one flow with the Group Capacity Scorecard (not necessarily simultaneously).

The Prospective parenting practices in the community tool evaluates the functioning of prospective parents in the community and makes an inventory of their needs. This tool can be done with any existing groups / structures that include young people or prospective parents (e.g. a youth Self-Help Group or other youth groups).

The ECDC Scorecard measures the quality of the ECD centres. The ECDC scorecard is done every other year and should be done for each ECD centre in the project.

The Farmer family statements (also known as PIP statements) reflect on the performances of farmer groups and their needs.

The Household Resiliency Index (HRI) measures economic resilience over time. For the Turakura program, we use the HRI to measure the impact of our program on the economic resiliency of specific households. Therefore, the same households must use the tool at the program’s beginning, mid-term, and end. This tool does not compare households or make generalized statements for the whole project area.
